Augustine and Dido in the Maghreb:

The Reception of Antiquity in Modern Tunisian and Algerian Literature.

Streszczenie:

The reception of St. Augustine and Dido/Elissa in francophone Maghrebian novels is a relatively recent phenomenon. It is part of a broader interest in antiquity in Maghrebian countries which manifested itself roughly around the year 2000 and is often focused on prominent personalities, including not only Dido and Augustine, but also Sophonisba, Massinissa, Apuleius and Hannibal. The renewed interest in antiquity is partly due to a self-assertation of the indigenous Berber/Amazigh population, which is especially numerous in Algeria. It also reflects the need to creatively engage with a local past that has long been perceived as an exclusively "Western" heritage. This presentation looks at the narrative strategies by which modern Maghrebian writers respond to these challenges and at the ways in which antiquity can make a relevant contribution to our contemporary world.
