wygłosi referat pt.
Parallel Perishing in the Life of Antony.
Streszczenie:
This talk will investigate the parallel deaths of Antony and Cleopatra in the Life of Antony. While Plutarch assessed Antony's death as bad but better than that of Demetrius in their synkrisis, it will be shown that the end of the Life of Antony reveals an embedded synkrisis that closely tracks the prolonged death episodes of the Roman and his Egyptian queen.
This talk, then, examines how Plutarch envisions the manner in which Antony and Cleopatra regard, prepare, and execute their deaths within the narrative. The text, as we will see, features manifestations of Plutarchan precepts of perfection of a) the presence (and especially absence of) successful political engagement and b) philosophical αὐτάρκεια through language of the body and servitude.
While a superficial reading already shows Antony's imperfect death and Cleopatra’s close to perfect death, additional undertones in Plutarch's narrative will emerge. For instance, Plutarch subtly but deftly frames these episodes with the presence or imagery of the banquet, itself, one might argue, a mixture of politics and philosophy. These depictions, then, have further implications for gender, morality, and exemplarity in the Plutarchan narrative and its reception.
